MESSAGE

Sales of Kawasaki’s 900 Super Four/Z1 (“Z1”) commenced in 1972, with the Japanese domestic market 750RS/Z2 (“Z2”)
following the next year. Both models were instantly popular from the time of their debut, together selling well over 120,000
units worldwide. They are historic models that have come to be recognised as symbols of Kawasaki motorcycles.

As they near their 50-year anniversary, these long-popular classic models remain loved and admired by many riders.
Numerous Z1s and Z2s, restored to beautiful working condition, can be found around the world today. In order to meet
the needs of Z1 and Z2 owners and support their lifestyle as motorcycle riders, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. (KHI)
has decided to reproduce the cylinder heads for these very important models.

KHI will reproduce the cylinder heads using current methods based on original part design plans and specifications.

Furthermore, KHI will examine the possibilities of reproducing parts other than the cylinder heads, as well as out-of-stock
parts of other historical models, taking into account customer feedback on this reproduction project.

[Z1/Z2 Cylinder Head Re-Production Project Update]

Let’s take a closer look at how at a trial-run cylinder head is produced.
To create the cylinder head, with its thin walls and hollow sections, a
process called low-pressure die casting is used. You can find more details
in the photo captions.

Picture 1 - Setting the sand cores and valve seats
The ports and other holow sections are formes using sand cores that are carefully set in the
mould. After the casting process, the sand cores are then removed, leaving the desired shape.
In the photo you can see the brown cores set next to the metal valve seat moulds.

Picture 2 - Clamping the mould
After the seting has been completet, the mould is clampes. Once it has been fully clamped, molten
aluminium is poured into the mould.

Picture 3 - Cast Cylinder Head
A freshly cast cylinder head, reborn after 50 years. The sand corea are still in place and here and there
you can see some small burrs (exess material) that will be removed later, but you can already
feel the functional beauty that these pieces will bring to their engines

The cylinder heads receive a number of surface treatments. First, zinc shot
blasting (a different process than originally used) cleans the surface and
creates a smooth surface texture that matches the Z1's elegant design. On
black cylinder heads, an electrodeposition coating process applies an even
coat of paint, improving the quality of the original pieces, whose cooling
fins sometimes received an uneven coating.
